Update 1/20/2021: I'm getting lots of complaints from YouTube viewers saying "they can't find the small key in Hyrule Castle." You have to kill all the green soldiers, bomb soldiers, and cannon soldiers to get both chests to appear, one of which contains a small key. I even updated the readme Word document to include this hint.
Update 1/31/2021: An improperly staircase in the Ice Palace has now been fixed. Going upstairs from B6 to B5 would actually take you to Ganon's room. Special thanks to FunkieCluckie for the heads up.
A Link to the Islands is a Wind Waker-inspired hack of A Link to the Past. It was originally called Lyra Islands and developed by SePH in 2004-2005, but it wasn't finished. In 2015, I took over the Lyra Islands project with the goal of finishing the game one day. I ended up making completely new overworlds and dungeons in addition to restoring the original LTTP graphics and renaming the game A Link to the Islands.
Expect to see:
- New overworld designs and maps.
- New Dark World design (Areas 43, 45, & 47 ONLY!).
- Hyrule Castle re-located.
- Kakariko Town re-located.
- New Lost Woods-style puzzle.
- Eight new dungeons and one mini-dungeon.
- Ganon gets his own tower in the Dark World.
- New monologue and in-game clues.
- New sprites.
- MSU-1 support.
- ASM hacks added.
- New ending cutscenes.
- Customized ending credits.
A few irreparable problems that popped up during development are documented in the readme included in the zip file. These problems do not affect gameplay and the game can be completed normally.
Unlike Parallel Worlds and Goddess of Wisdom, both of which are notorious for their unforgiving difficulty levels, A Link to the Islands is a game that's fair to everyone. There are no super tricks, stunts, or logic (i.e. masked objects, bomb jumping), while still having a decent level of difficulty. Though, some backtracking may be required at times. Still, you won't ever have to use save states. You will not be frustrated while playing.

No worries. Doesn't matter if the rom file is a .smc or .sfc, that patch should work on any US rom with no header that is 1,048,576 bytes in size and has the CRC32 777AAC2F checksum.
Unfortunately, I had to upload a new patch because RHDN rejected my submission. In this new patch, the original Lyra Islands title screen was restored, the cloud fog overlay was replaced with rain, and the Sky Isles were further modified. The Big Spike Block in Room 159 (Level 8: Ganon's Tower, 1F) was slightly shifted to the right to give players more room to move around without needing the Cane of Byrna. Pray for me that RHDN submission staff accept my submission this time because they're ultra strict about it.
During the development process, I had problems with the file selection/naming screen being corrupted. Even after copying the screen codes from an original LTTP rom, and re-pointing the headers, I am now unable to edit the title screen at all; I have to leave it as is. But at least I have a working file selection/naming screen now.

I am impressed so far, been playing almost 2 hours and i am having fun.
One side note though, when i am in a dungeon area, sometimes when i enter a new room, or when i switch between items with shoulder buttons, the screen will have glitchy black lines appear on screen where i can no longer see the screen. Sometimes rotating items with shoulder buttons or returning to overworld map fixes this. Sometimes it does not though. It is rare it happens, but it is frequent enough that i save state frequently as a back up plan. Do you think this is a cause of me patching rom incorrectly, or that the emulator i am using is not the best? I use snes9xgx that has been adapted for the wii u so i can play on my gamepad. It is not the best emulator.

I have that problem too when I use the L & R buttons to switch items. I honestly don't know what happened. I'll have to look into that, and I may have to release a new patch.
It is a fun hack so far though, i have been enjoying it.
I'm working on it right now. I'll have a new patch ready soon.
The buggy item switch ASM with shoulder buttons, usually only happens with MSU-1 every time you start a new file. Saving & quitting will make the bug go away. With that said, I wasn't able to reproduce the buggy item switch ASM after I disabled the MSU-1 video.
I disabled the MSU-1 video fix the critical bug involving the item switch ASM feature with shoulder buttons. I also separated the MSU-1 soundpack from the patch as directed by Conn.

Working wonderfully here, thank you so much !!!
I will have to patch a new game. I finished level 2 and been exploring a bit. I like the difficulty level of this game, harder than the first one but not insanely difficult.
Not quite sure how I did this one, but exploring Ice Palace, I missed the big key, upon exploring back, I made it to the fairy room. When I try to go up a level to B5, I actually end up at Ganon.
Hmm, that's.... weird. I'll have to look into that when I get a chance. I unfortunately don't have time for gaming rn because I just started university classes.
Couple more bugs I ran into. First one is pretty minor. 2nd Kholdstare has no ice showing. But you would assume you have to use bombos or firerod to get rid of it first. But after defeating Kholdstare, you can't menu, so you can't change items. only way to get it back is to go right 2 screens, but then you have to beat him again when you go left. Then it locks menu again.
FusterCluckie wrote:2nd Kholdstare has no ice showing.
Unless I change the door blockset from 19 to 11, then I can't really add Kholdstare's ice shell to room 123 in Ganon's Tower. So I have to leave it as it is.
Door blockset 19 is for Ganon's room, while blockset 11 is for the Ice Palace and is the only one with Kholdstare's ice shell.

That usually happens anytime you defeat a boss, whether or not it drops a Heart Container, so it is not something I would consider a bug.

I fixed it...
This is an amazing hack but I am stuck. I can't find out how to get to the basement in the lost woods dungeon. There is a room with 2 walls and a pit in the middle and a room next to it with 3 pits, 2 pots and 2 blocks and its clear that I need to be on the other side of the pits in one of those rooms but I can't figure out how to get there.
I have tried all the items I have found so far including the flute, master sword, Bombos, cape etc and I can't find any way past those pits deeper into the dungeon (some guy told me something about a cave in the forest that needs a special weapon but that doesn't help)
Killed everything in both rooms, pushed all the blocks and tried everything else I can think of but I can't figure out how to get down to the basement where the big chest and crystal boss are.

Yeah, I know what you mean. Hold your sword out for a spin attack, stand above the block, and dash bounce across the pit. From there, you can either get the hidden Piece of Heart or go to the basement.
BTW, that hint the NPC gave you is for the exploding wall in the basement.

Thanks for all the info, I got as far as Gannon and then died (couldn't be bothered going all the way back through, finding the stuff I missed like extra hearts and the better sword etc).
Really awesome hack though (even if those flying floor tiles are a little overused...

Are you the same jonwil from Hyrule Magic beta testers fame?
Hey ppl I just joined I don’t know how to do all this stuff yet so I’m playing this game on an actual SNES and I LOVE this Hack it’s fantastic and fresh and I just have one question though, why can’t I fall or jump into the well in kakariko village even after I get the hammer I just jump over it when I knock the stumps down, am I missing something? Or is there nothing there? Or nothing important anyways? I hope so as I have version 2.4 aswell which I believe has the glitch in the ice palace that leads to Ganon?? How do I avoid that??? Thanks so much ppl I love your work and need your patreon info to find your projects a bit as I enjoy them so much. Especially in this lockdown we’re in.
