Compressed audio support (.OGG, .MP3)
Hello everyone.
Does someone know if it's possible to have MSU-1 games with compressed audio in formats such as .FLAC, .OGG, or .MP3, instead of uncompressed WAV/PCM files?
The idea is to reduce overall file size of an MSU-1 game. I mean, the idea of having CD audio in SNES games is pretty cool, but having a 2mb SNES game becoming a 500mb game mostly due to uncompressed music files is very space-consuming, especially on devices with less disk space such as portables or raspberry-based emulation consoles.
Since MD+ supports .ogg playback (tried on RetroArch with lr-genesisplus), it'd be awesome to have the same thing on SNES MSU-1 games.

Re: Compressed audio support (.OGG, .MP3)
I agree that this would be a nice feature, but I don't think it's in the works for MSU-1 SNES games.
AFAIK nobody here had a part in designing the MSU-1 specification, which is designed to work as a real expansion chip on a real Super Nintendo and has support from a small selection of emulators.
This could be accomplished specifically in emulation, but then it's up to the developers of said emulators to include this support..

Re: Compressed audio support (.OGG, .MP3)
MSU1 was invented by byuu. He wanted to have real hardware compatibility and succeeded (sd2snes can play msu games). It may be possible on emulators (not sure), but the snes is completely overwhelmed if it has to run also a decompress algorithm next to transmit the audio data.

The decoding of the conpressed file could be done by the FPGA instead of the console itself the way doom runs on the Mega Everdrive.
That does however depend on the FPGA being powerful enough vas I recall the original sd2snes is already at the limit supporting all the additional enhancement chips that the Snes had
