Donkey Kong Country 1 (Finished)

Boah, this one was a bitch! I needed two days to find a way to mute the spc, and eventually I got it with aram hacking
So here you go, the msu1 asm for Donkey Kong Country 1 (I guess EmuandCo will get excited).
I release it as open source as usual, so the community can take care of the rest if wished... What is needed?
- bml, xml - anybody here who can do this (secret of evermore needs those files as well)
- pcm theme list and tracks - I already adjusted the loop table. Make a breakpoint at
8AB1CB
For example:
$8A/B1CB C2 30 REP #$30 A:0009
So this is track 09, which is the title screen. Unfortunately, the tracks in donkey kong country start at 00, so I added +1. This means that the title screen is not
dkc_msu1-9.pcm, but dkc_msu1-10.pcm
The tracks range from 00-1b (while 1b is sort of muting everything, so let's say 00-1a is needed for pcm:s.
With the add with +1 and hex-dec conversation the themes are
dkc_msu1-1.pcm (hex 00, the jungle level music)
...
dkc_msu1_27.pcm (1a is the last track, dec 26+1 = 27)
So to map the tracks correctly, you can set the breakpoint at
8AB1CB, edit register and insert e.g., 1a into the Accumulator, to know which the last theme is. Or you play through the game with the breakpoint and look which value is in A. Of course this must be done with the unpatched rom, since the patch mutes spc, whether msu1 is detected or not. Sorry, there is no other way than changing the aram to mute.
PCM:s so far:
Its a Dubstep Mix:
Donkey Kong Dubstep Country
(In the Archive are the .pcm files plus Cover-Art)
Its for the "Kremlings Revenge Remodel" Patch or for standard Donkey Kong Country:
Donkey Kong Country - Kremlings Revenge Remodel
(In the Archive are the .pcm files and Cover-Art)
different versions (US, Europe, Kremling Remodel inside the zip)

Just FYI, 0 should be a valid MSU-1 track number (dkc_msu1-0.pcm).

Re: Donkey Kong Country 1 (Finished)
As always I do not recommend OCRemix. I had quite some work to replace most of em. They just don't fit nicely in a game and many are mixes of two or more tracks. Buuut, THX CONN If noone volunteers, I will check it out @weekend
Re: Donkey Kong Country 1 (Finished)
Yeah, as much as I love OCR for listening to, the only album of theirs I've ever satisfactorIly converted into an MSU-1 soundtrack was FFVI Balance & Ruin. They just don't tend to work well in-game (mostly due to the fact that the kinds of remixes that DO sound good are usually rejected over there for not being "creative enough with the source material" or similar reasons. Which is fine for what it is they're going for, but their goals differ from ours in that regard.

Re: Donkey Kong Country 1 (Finished)
Thanks for the feedback
as said, I didn't find a mute track or whatever, so the mute spc is hardcoded by changing two bytes in the apu asm (it's really disgusting to trace/hack that).
When applying the patch you should only hear sfx; means a complete pcm set is necessary (no spc fallback) and the other msu hacks usually play the normal spc if no msu detected; this was not possible to feature in my hack.
btw: Does anybody know a easy way to create bml/xml? It is wild guessing for me to create these...

Ah, I didn't know this. If it causes confusion, I could change it back to start with track-0.pcmJust FYI, 0 should be a valid MSU-1 track number (dkc_msu1-0.pcm).
when looking at youtube, I found at least 5 remastered versions of life in the mines, some were excellent, some less. We have 3 different pcm sets for f-zero, 2 for sf2, several for smk... I love diversity, so if here are more some more packs emerging I'd welcome thisAs always I do not recommend OCRemix. I had quite some work to replace most of em.

Re: Donkey Kong Country 1 (Finished)
Here's the playlist:
first number is the hex value (used ingame); second the number you need for the pcm:s (e.g., dkc_msu1-5.pcm is mine cart madness); loop: y-yes, n-no; and theme description as you can find it on youtube.
hex pcm loop theme
00 1 y (island swing) jungle
01 2 y cave dweller concert
02 3 y stop&go (misty menace)
03 4 y aquatic ambience
04 5 y mine cart madness
05 6 y ice (northern hemisphere)
06 7 y voices of the temple e.g, millstone mayhem
07 8 y fear factory
08 9 y life in the mines
09 10 y? title screen
0a 11 n (opening fanfare) rare logo
0b 12 y ice cave
0c 13 y map (simian segue)
0d 14 y forest frenzy
0e 15 y credits
0f 16 n K.Rool's Cacophony
10 17 y bonus level
11 18 n dead
12 19 n win bonus level
13 20 y treetop rock
14 21 y funky flights
15 22 y boss theme
16 23 y candy's save point
17 24 y cranky's theme
18 25 y k rool gang plank galleon
19 26 n fail on bonus level
1a 27 n well done complete level
Note: I think the title screen does not loop, but I gave it a 03 value to loop. If needed I change it to 01, but right now I do not think it is necessary; it just breaks up at a point and starts anew.

Re: Donkey Kong Country 1 (Finished)
hm, as said previously, I find life in the mines one of the best spc ever made. I even had it as ringtone (love that flute) and when I was young I just went into that level to hear that song
I listened to some themes in ocremix, and especially to my beloved theme (which is the main reason I made this msu hack), and must admit that I share the opinion of qwerty and emunadco. That one isn't my taste
I hope there will be at least 2 packs, where one is closer to the original experience, I found a couple remastered versions at youtube, like this

Re: Donkey Kong Country 1 (Finished)
I have patched the v1.2 but the music is complete off. With and without .pcm in the folder. If i put "dkc_msu1-10" no music is available in Game. If i delete it, no music is vailable, too.

Don't get me wrong, I love OCR. I just haven't been happy with my attempts to use their tracks with the MSU-1.

I sent you my version per mail. If you load it with a normal emulator you should hear sfx.I have patched the v1.2 but the music is complete off. With and without .pcm in the folder. If i put "dkc_msu1-10" no music is available in Game. If i delete it, no music is vailable, too.
I do not know what could be wrong with your game, that you do not even hear sfx. I can only guess that it is either wrong country or has a header.
If you find out, let us know
or wait, do you use
dkc_msu1-10.pcm
or
dkc_msu-10.pcm?
It must be named all the exact same as your .msu and .smc!

Re: Donkey Kong Country 1 (Finished)
Thanks, your version works. I dont know why my versions not worked. Without header. Now the music works. i named also all files to dkc_msu now. (dkc_msu-10 for theme)

Great! Can you mail your version back please? I can check and maybe find out what the problem is...

Re: Donkey Kong Country 1 (Finished)
That's strange. The version you sent is ~exactly the same as that I sent to you. I used a hex comparison program which shows byte-wise differences, and it couldn't detect one. Guess something went wrong somehow on your side, but as it all works now, all is good, I'd say

Re: Donkey Kong Country 1 (Finished)
Your version works. Your hax Program shows no differences, but comes pcm music on your emulator?

Re: Donkey Kong Country 1 (Finished)
As said, both roms, that I sent to you, and that which you sent in return are identical. To ensure I now also loaded your rom in snes9x 1.55 and surprise: msu works.
There are some possibilities:
- you didn't name it correctly
- you sent me a wrong rom
I really do not have a better explanation.

Well, I will look that weekend, but I would say more than one and we make a great pack off all the suggestions. What do you think? Loops are my weakest spot I fear... (DKC2 still has none^^)
