updates seem pretty slow now
i have noticed that this site does not seem as active as it used to be. is it because of hyrule magic not having a successor released or other hackers simply retiring?

Re: updates seem pretty slow now
The entire reason the site was created centered around the development of Parallel Universes, which became Conker's High Rule Tail. It makes sense that the activity would die down with its release. And a lot of the people involved have either gone on to other things or have retired (more than once in some instances )

i was working on a hack, but HM became too frustrating too use because even when I think I have it ready, I discover that one of the rooms is bugged. is Zeldix Magic still in development or is that on a hiatus/cancelled?

Re: updates seem pretty slow now
You said this once before already. Read what Qwerty said. The real romhacker doesn't need a forum or to post to finish his hack.i have noticed that this site does not seem as active as it used to be. is it because of hyrule magic not having a successor released or other hackers simply retiring?
Also answered before. Not cancelled, the author of Zeldix Magic simply quit Zeldix and moved to Discord where they update daily. However ZM is far from being finished (don't expect anything in the next couple of years).is Zeldix Magic still in development or is that on a hiatus/cancelled?

Re: updates seem pretty slow now
well at least it is in development. hopefully it does not get cancelled or at least the torch gets passed to someone else if they are willing to finish the job.

Re: updates seem pretty slow now
I am working on a small editor very basic and easy to use that should be done probably before the end of the year i hope it will probably help Zeldix Magic to progress as well.
you can see some test i've made so far :
overworld :

dungeons :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=clju2Kit6Zc
those are mainly tests nothing of that is final

Re: updates seem pretty slow now
I have an idea, why can't someone make a homebrew editor for a zelda 3 style game for the SNES.
This way we can make SNES games and not have to worry about the legal issues.
So please don't make a Zelda 3 editor or improve upon Hyrule Magic. Just make a zelda 3 style game engine for the SNES.

Re: updates seem pretty slow now
HM has ruined so many copies of my roms. one thing I want to work on is to redesign the dungeons where they are more interesting. the tower of hera, for example is pretty bland in comparison to its ALBW counterpart (which in fairness is thanks to the 3D models) and Eagle's Tower from Link's Awakening, which was able to come up with more ideas and it was in 8-Bit. what I am trying to do is to keep the dungeons open to have more optional items while every dungeon has at least one optional key.

i have a test hack i use for tile set edits, and i made a wasteland version of Hyrule with blood colored rivers and lakes. i wanted to make it look more Hellish in design.
can this edit rooms and how stable is the editor?

Re: updates seem pretty slow now
homebrew editor if i were ever doing a game engine like zelda i would probably not make it on snes because of the limitations that would be much more efficient on pc that would take years to do with a team so i don't really think that's a good idea lol
Nop it can't do anything for now it was mostly hardcoded i'm working on a new version it progressing really fast it will be much more stable than HM but probably a bit more limited

Bad idea. You think there will be no legal issues if you are making a "homebrew editor for a zelda 3 style game" for the SNES.I have an idea, why can't someone make a homebrew editor for a zelda 3 style game for the SNES.

This is Nintendo we are talking about. If they have caused youtubers to receive copyright strikes for uploading let's play videos or anything that comes close to using their IP when it is not even violating fair use (there is a reason why Jim Sterling keeps bashing them for these situations), then there is no doubt that they would do the same by having a C&D like they did for any other fan made titles.
I just hope Nintendo will release a Zelda maker one day, but in reality, it will probably only be restricted to Zelda 1 because the tile set is a lot more complicated than a platformer like Mario. one thing about editing Zelda 3's tile set, especially the maps is how much of a head ache it can be. dungeons are even more of a nightmare.

Re: updates seem pretty slow now
I said zelda 3 style game, not actually zelda 3. All long as you dont use any of graphics from nintendo's games then it should be legally okay. after all it would be a homebrew game.

Re: updates seem pretty slow now
Zarby89, this looks like a great editor, just make sure that in the end you slip into the program on purpose a few bugs so that hackers still have to use careful hex edits to fix the rom.
Make sure that in every version of the editor that in the about tab that you make it so that it always says the same version number.
Make it closed source so that nobody can improve upon the editor and then vanish off the face of the internet, but just for kicks give the full source code to just a few people with the agreement that they never release the source code to anyone else.
Only then will this new Zelda 3 editor that you are working on be of any use to the Zelda 3 hacking community.

Which only shows how unthoughtful the work on Hyrule Magic was. I believe you also forgot to add the bugged nature of the code of Hyrule Magic itself.Erockbrox wrote:Zarby89, this looks like a great editor, just make sure that in the end you slip into the program on purpose a few bugs so that hackers still have to use careful hex edits to fix the rom.

Re: updates seem pretty slow now
Isn't it obvious, Scream Magic is a dungeon editor, as far as I know. Nothing else is done and this is indeed a correct order of business. Even if any editor is "just" an indoor editor, it's a heavy update already.wizzrobemaster wrote:what is this editor not going to have that HM had? how is it going to be different?
Yes, he/we know, he was being ironic.also my code is open source!

Re: updates seem pretty slow now
I am surprised how quickly this is making progress. will the over world also have edits? I guess I will no longer have to wait for Zeldix magic if this gets released. Puzzledude, once this program is released and is tested for better stability, should I use a clean rom instead?
anyway, one thing I would like to see is an item editor that can edit the damage classes of items. Final Fantasy 6 has a multi-editing program that can edit the attributes of stats and scripts, but that is an RPG.

changing the color palette freely is a nice addition. the only problem is that some tile sets share the same palette. I tried to fix the sand tile in the Lanmola's room in Ganon's Tower when using the hyrule castle colors, but it ended up affecting the bridges in misery mire.
anyway, i recommend having debuggers take a look at the editor once you finish it.

Re: updates seem pretty slow now
Yeah i know unfortunately there are linked palettes hehe i might get rid of them at some point i don't even know why they exist i don't know for the overworld editor yet i will probably have a overworld viewer so can see entrances and stuff but making an overworld editor better than HM is kinda hard to be honest i'd recommend using a clean rom but it not necessary it should work fine with HM edited roms too, it can open US, JP and randomizer rom i won't support any others version

if removing linked color palettes is possible, then I can finally have Link with the corrected hair color. part of what I am planning in my hack is to add diggable holes (this is where I will have the cane of byrna, but my hack is still a work in progress as i want to add better difficulty distribution and less redundant rooms being close to each other). i presume the over world is more difficult because of the over lays and more tile sets?

Re: updates seem pretty slow now
overworld is actually super easy to but i mean it hard to do better than HM, i have a viewer already i could probably turn it into an editor in couple hours of work but it would be bad also overworld map are compressed and that's an easy way to corrupt rom if you don't know what you are doing haha
